Spotlight on the Profession of Land Surveying

Most surveyors – and anyone involved in land surveying – have been in the situation where someone asks: “What do surveyors actually do”?

Common Misconceptions About Land Surveyors

People typically know that the guy on the side of the road looking through that “telescopey thing” or holding that “stick thing” are surveyors, but it’s surprising how many people don’t understand what surveyors do. Yes, surveyors do survey work on the side of the road, but there’s so much more to land surveying.

What Do Land Surveyors Actually Do?

You could respond by saying that Land Surveyors provide mapping, boundary determination, legal parcel determination, forensic mapping and consulting, among other services; or you could say that Land Surveyors provide geodetic positioning-location on Earth to centimetre accuracy.

For Posterity

In addition, Land Surveyors set markers that will be left for posterity; markers for Land Surveyors of the future to discover, measure and preserve. And, it’s up to Land Surveyors to determine the location of century-old markers left by their predecessors, determining their importance, meaning, and veracity for boundary location.

Generally, Land Surveyors are the first to appear and often the last to leave projects. They determine land formations and property title lines, so it’s very important that people acknowledge the importance Land Surveyors have had on our planet in the past, in the present, and their role in the future.

Land Surveyors in Space

It’s easy to see that Land Surveyors will be among the first to arrive on distant planets to create planetary reference systems, reference points, and eventually the location of features that will be used for mankind’s needs.

The truth is that very little progress is achieved without Land Surveyors: surveyors carry out the initial spatial assessment of projects, they transfer the design to construction, then locate improvements as completed.

Public Perception of Land Surveying

With Land Surveyors carrying out such important and necessary work, it’s of concern that the land surveying industry is still misunderstood by the general public. Perhaps the industry in general should take a closer look at the public’s perception, or lack of, of Land Surveyors’ and the enormous responsibilities they assume during the course of their duties.
